From the exhibition Mängult/Päriselt
The exhibition **"FOR PLAY / FOR REAL"** took place from **July 5 to July 28, 2014**, in **A-Gallery’s Vault**.
The exhibition is based on real-life games. Through cards and chess pieces, a world unfolds where, as a wishful fantasy, the player has the chance to be a king, a game master, a god. But in defeat, this house of cards can collapse into bleak ruin. Still, that’s nothing to worry about—there’s always another round. Maybe next time you’ll get a better hand or face a weaker opponent. And if all else fails, you can always cheat a little and play the trump card you’ve secretly tucked up your sleeve. Taking life playfully makes it a bit easier to accept that in a world where everything is for sale, you’re not really the one in control of the game—just a mere pawn.
In Margit Paulin’s jewelry, chess pieces are used as the primary material. In Keiu Koppel’s works, one can find both playing cards and bank cards. Margit and Keiu studied together as coursemates at the Estonian Academy of Arts and are currently working in the same studio.
