The artist's story
Each piece of jewellery on this page originates from artist Margit Paulin’s creative vision and the themes that inspire her introspection. Every item is a unique designer piece, handcrafted by the artist herself.
The story of each piece of jewellery begins with its wearer – the person who merges with it and, perhaps unknowingly, chooses to wear it as their cherished talisman.
A piece of jewellery on a lapel is not merely a beautiful ornament — it carries within it the wearer’s values and essence, held inside that small, shining form. A piece created with such soul is given and worn from generation to generation. This is the kind of jewellery truly worthy of the name.
My attraction to art began in my youth, when I studied in the art class at Kopli Art Secondary School in Tallinn. Later, I refined my artistic signature at the Estonian Academy of Arts, specialising in jewellery design, and further developed my goldsmithing skills at Lahti University of Applied Sciences in Finland. I have also expanded my knowledge of gemstones through studies at the Gemological Institute of America.
In my work, I value one condition above all — silence. The silence of the forest. In silence, you find your way back to yourself, and through that, a path to expressing creativity in jewellery and the stories they tell. What inspires me most is the story of the future wearer — the search for their personality reflected in materials and forms.
I believe every person carries a story within them, and delving into that story through the making of a piece of jewellery is what makes the creative journey so captivating for me. Every new creation begins with a person — with exploring their individuality, their essence, and their story as perceived through the eyes of the wearer.
From a few initial hints, a jewellery design emerges. Together, we select the materials, and the crafting process begins in the workshop. Each piece is entirely handmade — from melting and casting the metal, rolling and shaping it, modeling and polishing the minerals, to the final presentation in its gift box.
For me, it is important that jewellery endures over time, so that the story of the wearer can be carried forward.
I work with precious metals, combined with minerals, gemstones, and wood. Inspired by the story behind each piece, very different materials may come together in a single creation. To me, a piece of jewellery is a gift for the soul.
Oddities in People and Theatre
I love experiencing theatre, whether in real life or on stage. I am fascinated by eccentric individuals — the kind people describe as “still waters with deep bottoms.” I take pleasure in observing those who can hold onto a sense of mystery. True enigma offers surprises and the unexpected, enriching life’s journey. Unraveling one mystery often leads to another. The human being is, above all, an endlessly intriguing character.
Dark humor
I believe that ultimately, anything in the world can be laughed at. It all depends on the angle from which you view it, and how you choose to look. Every matter has two sides: black and white, with the space in between feeling like wandering through emptiness, beyond time and place. Yet from that emptiness, countless colors can emerge. Is it yes or no? Black or white? Are you a mother or a father? A man or a woman? An animal or a bird? A bird or a fish? Dark humor allows us to laugh at life, even when it seems we shouldn’t.
Nature’s Beauty and Harmony
Nature offers us a beauty of flawless order, which can be transformed by the artist’s hand, granting wings to human thought. Nature holds all our possibilities. It gives and it takes. The silence of the forest soothes the soul, while the murmur of the sea brings fresh winds to the mind. Alone on a misty morning lake, one can behold nature’s true beauty — the perfectly arranged ripples created as fish break the water’s surface, arising simply from the need to breathe.
The Voice of Silence and the Little Bell
The voice of silence within the heart allows a little bell to chime, showing what is truly right and what ought to be. People would benefit from taking the time to listen to this silent voice, to speak with the bell. I believe the bell is one of the most vital characters in this story.
