Gentlemen and jewelry
On this snowy first Sunday of Advent, I’d like to share a wonderful story about love and jewelry. This past spring, one evening, I received a message from a friend traveling in Colombia, along with a photo of two green stones. It turned out that they had stumbled upon a “paradise of emeralds” — a gemstone shop — and had already chosen a pair of beautiful green emeralds to make earrings for their dearest someone far away in Estonia. There’s something truly beautiful about the longing that arises while traveling, thinking of a loved one from afar.
At one point, those stunning green emeralds from Colombia arrived on my table, and the earring design process began. For some reason, the **foxtail oats** growing in my flower box caught my eye — alone, they seemed so delicate and beautiful… like the longing for a loved one when far away. I had the idea to capture that beautiful, tender feeling in the jewelry. The foxtail oats concept also resonated with the client. I designed the ears combining **Eesti foxtail oat grains in yellow 750 gold** with the Colombian emeralds and tiny black diamonds. And thus, the beautiful emerald earrings were completed.
Interestingly, it was my first time setting emeralds, and knowing how delicate they can be (hardness 7.5–8), I was genuinely nervous about the possibility of them breaking while securing them in the metal.
When I handed over the foxtail oat earrings to the wearer, I was surprised to learn that she works in agriculture, and foxtail oats are actually a major headache that farmers struggle with. It’s wonderful to discover these connections and see how coincidences align.
And I’m incredibly happy to see that not all gentlemen in the world have disappeared — there are still those who love their ladies so romantically and wholeheartedly. Such a beautiful, romantic story behind these earrings. Wishing you a peaceful Advent season, and always love with all your heart!
